Getting ready for 8th edition 40k. Turning lead and plastic into Dorn's Wolves.

So where to from here.

My marine collection is at a stage that it needs some serious effort put into it. Both in assembly and painting to make it look like an army.

I intend over the next 8 months to turn this rabble of leftover armies of the past.

My vehicles

Frederick the Dreadnought and Landspeeder storm

Fast attack bikes and Assault marines

My HQ Brother Captain and Librarian

Tactical Squad with one painted marine, most were H-armless.

Plasma tactical

Missile Devastators

Scout marines - only painted and based unit in the army.

Sniper scouts- need heads.

Command squad.

Into an assembled and painted equivalent of this, so that I shall not be embarrassed to put them on the table and roll some dice.

Not my army, but a nice salamander force. something like this, but painted red.

Deadline- December 2017
Goal - 1850 points of Dorn's Wolves.
Reward - Attend Cancon and have some fun with the army.

Time to start turning my bits of lead and plastic into an army worthy of Dorn.

Brains- Or a WIP of my Vampire Zombies

It has been slow in my hobby world of late, with the 9th edition uncertanity.

But even with that I have managed to go through my collection and find my zombies both new and secondhand and fleshed out(pardon the pun) three units of 30 zombies or 90 zombies. To be honest i doubt i will need more than 90 of those rotters.

So work to date.

One unit taking shape with the green zombies and regiment bases, some zombies still need torso's.

Another two units again some torso work required.

As you can see from the pictures it is early days so far, some zombies are partially assembled and some zombies will need a new paint scheme/ re-basing.

But it is a start.

Axemaster: The painting push

Well with my list submitted now it is the painting side of the army that needs focus, the painting scores for Axemaster are either 0 or 20 depending on your army.

You score 20 if your entire army is painted  and based this includes movement trays.

You score 0 if any one of your figures or movement tray are not completely painted and based , so it is a yes or no question, at this stage my army is a NO, but I am aiming for a YES. So with 12 days before the tournament I have the following that I need to paint and base.

1. 9 Wildriders
2. 1 Treekin unit filler
3. 6 waywatchers
4. 10 scouts
5. 1 glade captain battle standard bearer
6. Ferastella mounted glade captain.
7. Citadel Wood
8. Make Movement Trays
9. Base the entire army

So not a huge amount with 28 figures and movement trays only time will tell.

Duelling Gamers: August the call of Kurnous, of Wild hunts and woods

Well August is here and so is the Flu,I hope that the Flu will go soon, anyway this is my plan for the month,and with a sprinkle of luck it should pan out.
Step one: Get rid of the Flu,
Step two: Paint the balance of July and what I plan for August,
Step three: Finish August up to date,so that I can have a good crack at September.

Anyway here we go.

With my $100 retail plus the $10.25 savings from last month , I have $110.25, with this  I purchased the following

1.  5 Glade Guard which I received in May as part of a birthday present for $0.00, saving $17.18 of real money but counting as 17.18 towards the challenge.Birthday present are a great way to boost an army with out costing a lot of money, and friends and family may not always be giving you exactly what you are after at the time, but everything has a use and I am always happy to get these types of gifts.
2. 5 Metal Wild riders for $0.00 traded from Wargamerau for some Lizardmen I was not using, saving $45.00 of real money but counting as 45.00 towards the challenge.( Although luckily for me the new plastic kit is cheaper than 5 metal wild riders used to be which would have been a whole month of painting on just 5 models for $96.00. Sometimes and I say this rarely GW do warrant praise)
3. A Citadel Wood for $36.80 purchased from my LGS, but counts as $46.00 retail for the Challenge saving $9.20 of real dollars. The wood elves are a funny army, because they are allowed to place an extra wood for no points or D3+1 woods if you buy the acorn of ages for 100pts. The last army book they were allowed to place an extra 6" wood before deployment, in the current army book this has been improved in size to a Citadel Wood to be place before deployment. ( I am aware of the marketing thoughts that were probably behind this and to be honest I still think it is a great move.) I had though of just using an outline of the base of the wood, which you get get off the net( probably will if i decided to make an extra three down the track if/when i run an acorn of the ages), but instead decided to treat myself to the actual one from GW, it was going to count for retail value anyway and to be honest its is a nice looking kit with lots of extras that i intend to use on other models.

So after this months spend i have left $2.07 towards the final month of September.
With five months of purchases for the Wood elves my spending looks like this.

Originally I had intended to run these Glade guard as a single unit, but upon further consideration I think 2 units of 10 will work better for the army.

Welcome back to another installment of Wood elves whimsy, well as we enter the forth month of the Duel, I find that I am behind in my painting with still needing to complete 19 Glade Guard from June it is a shame but that is life for you, this will put the pressure on now with only another two months to go after this one my plan for July is thus.

With my $100 retail plus the $20.25 savings from last month this gives a budget of  $120.25 for July, I used this to purchased the following

1. 2 Game zone Great Eagles  for $0.00 traded from Wargamerau for some Lizardmen I was not using, saving $88.00 of real money but counting as 88.00 towards the challenge.
2. Spellsinger on foot for $0.00 traded from Wargamerau for again some Lizardmen I was not using, saving $22.00 of real money but counting as 22.00 towards the challenge.

So $10.25 left for August.

So after four months of purchases for the Wood elves my spending looks like this.

Duelling gamers: Glade guard test model complete.

With the first week of June almost over my progress has been what can only be called slow, I have only managed to finish my glade guard test figure to a point that I am happy with how the colours look.
My great plans from last month worked on paper but not in reality, I have found that there is no point rushing into a paint scheme if you are not happy with it, I learnt that hard lesson with my Dawi Zharr, but I am happy with how the test model has turned out so the painting production line can start churning out the other 19, and while that happens I will start working on my elven steed test colour. I will not have time to paint anymore this week as I am off to the mother in laws, for farm and pony shenanigans.

Duelling gamers : Dryad unit filler complete, roll on my Treeman.

Well it has been a hectic week for us here but the good news is that my Dryad unit filler is complete, I am not entirely happy with the hair of my captured Dwarf slayer, but it has been over 10 years since painting my Chaos Dwarfs so I will forgive myself this once.
Work is progressing on the Treeman with his base coat finally completed, I had a few issues with the Treeman as I purchased him second hand and a few minor tweaks were needed so that it would assemble, and in the end I decided to make him a Tripod Treeman instead of the quad he was designed to be, I like the look of three legs better then the 4 legs of the original, and it makes him uniquely mine.

Duelling gamers: Dryad unit filler

Well the new army book has landed and I have spent the majority of this last week reading it cover to cover, my revised army list that I will be using for the Duel has a post of its own so I will not rehash it here, instead lets focus on what modeling I have managed this week.

As you can see, I have been fairly unproductive with the only figure being a three base unit filler for my dryads regiment to take the unit count to 15 models, once I play a few games with the army I will know if I should invest in more dryads or if the get shelved for a while.

I will need feedback from my fellow Dueler's however so that I know if the unit filler should cost GW prices of 3 dryads in which case it is $13.75 out of my remaining $44 .

I think the filler looks good, this is the first time that I have made a unit filler for any army, so I kept it very simple and tried not get carried away, it was cheap to make in real dollars all told about $0.72 cents this is what the bases themselves would cost if I purchased a GW square base set, as the bits and bases minus the dwarf all came with the Dryad sprue, and the dwarf came from BFSP sprues.
